As the Lenten season begins, the inspirational yet tragic story of Father Rhoel Gallardo, a Claretian missionary priest who was abducted and martyred by the Abu Sayyaf in 2000, is brought to life in the highly anticipated film ‘In Thy Name’.
Directed by Ceasar Soriano, the film depicts Fr. Rhoel’s unwavering faith amid torture and coercion during his captivity and his ultimate sacrifice in service of God.
At the premiere night on March 4, director Soriano shared how the story resonates deeply with him, having personally survived an Abu Sayyaf kidnapping in 1994.
“This is my dream project,” Soriano said. “I was kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf in 1994, and having grown up in Mindanao, I witnessed the region’s conflicts firsthand. This film is not just about Fr. Rhoel—it’s about God’s love story through his life and martyrdom.”
Fr. Rhoel, who was brutally tortured and executed after refusing to renounce his faith, is now being considered for beatification, a step toward sainthood in the Catholic Church. His cause for sainthood was officially initiated in 2021, making him a potential third Filipino saint after San Lorenzo Ruiz and San Pedro Calungsod.
Actor McCoy de Leon, who plays Fr. Rhoel, described the role as one of his most challenging yet fulfilling performances.
“This is more than just a movie for me. We wanted to make something meaningful—something that could leave a lasting impact,” de Leon shared.
“Fr. Rhoel’s story deserves to be told, and I gave my heart and soul to this role. I hope the film inspires and strengthens people’s faith.”
Joining de Leon in ‘In Thy Name’ are an ensemble of acclaimed actors, including JC de Vera, Mon Confiado, Alex Medina, Aya Fernandez, Ynez Veneracion, and Soliman Cruz.
With its poignant storytelling and historical significance, ‘In Thy Name’ seeks to honor Fr. Rhoel Gallardo’s legacy while shedding light on the realities of religious persecution in the Philippines.
