For many Filipinos who grew up during the 1990s and early 2000s, afternoons meant rushing home from school, finishing homework as quickly as possible, and turning on the television just in time for their favorite anime.

Long before streaming platforms made Japanese animation available anytime and anywhere, local television networks introduced an entire generation to unforgettable heroes, magical girls, ninjas, and giant robots through Filipino-dubbed broadcasts.

These shows didn’t just entertain—they became part of childhood. They inspired playground games, school conversations, toy collections, and even lifelong passions for anime and manga. Here are 12 classic anime that defined the childhood of countless Filipino millennials.

1. Inuyasha (ABS-CBN, 2002)

Originally released in Japan in 2000, Inuyasha followed the adventures of half-demon Inuyasha and modern-day schoolgirl Kagome Higurashi, who is transported to Japan’s feudal era through an ancient well. Together, they search for the shattered pieces of the powerful Shikon Jewel while battling demons and uncovering mysteries from the past.

The series became a massive hit on ABS-CBN after its Tagalog-dubbed premiere in 2002, thanks to its mix of action, romance, comedy, and fantasy.

2. Sailor Moon (ABC-5, 1994)

Before superhero movies became mainstream, Filipino kids were already cheering for Usagi Tsukino, the clumsy but lovable teenager who transforms into Sailor Moon.

Alongside the Sailor Guardians, she protected Earth from the forces of darkness while searching for the Moon Princess. With five seasons and 200 episodes, Sailor Moon became one of the most iconic magical girl anime ever produced and remains beloved by fans today.

3. Samurai X (Studio 23, 1998)

Known internationally as Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai X introduced viewers to Kenshin Himura, the legendary assassin known as “Hitokiri Battousai,” who vows never to kill again after the Meiji Restoration.

Armed with his reverse-blade sword, Kenshin travels Japan protecting the innocent while confronting the ghosts of his violent past. Its emotional storytelling and memorable sword fights made it a fan favorite among Filipino audiences.

4. Naruto (ABS-CBN, 2003)

Few anime have become as influential as Naruto. The series follows orphan ninja Naruto Uzumaki, who dreams of becoming Hokage despite being feared because the Nine-Tailed Fox is sealed inside him.

Filipino viewers followed Naruto’s journey from an outcast to a respected ninja, making the series one of the defining anime of the 2000s.

5. Ghost Fighter (IBC-13, GMA-7)

Known in Japan as Yu Yu Hakusho, Ghost Fighter became a cultural phenomenon in the Philippines thanks to its memorable Tagalog dub.

The story follows delinquent Yusuke Urameshi—better known locally as Eugene—who dies while saving a child before returning to life as the Underworld Detective. Alongside Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei, he battles powerful demons in one of the country’s most beloved anime series.

6. Slam Dunk (ABC-5, 1995; GMA-7, 2002)

Basketball-loving Filipinos instantly connected with Slam Dunk, which tells the story of hot-headed delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi and his unexpected journey into competitive basketball.

The series inspired countless kids to pick up a basketball and remains one of the most influential sports anime ever created.

7. Cardcaptor Sakura (ABS-CBN, 2001)

Cardcaptor Sakura follows elementary school student Sakura Kinomoto, who accidentally releases magical Clow Cards from an enchanted book.

With the help of her best friend Tomoyo and guardian beast Kerberos, Sakura embarks on a magical adventure filled with friendship, courage, and heartwarming moments that captivated audiences of all ages.

8. Digimon Adventure (ABS-CBN, 2000)

Unlike Pokémon, Digimon transported ordinary children into the Digital World, where they partnered with digital monsters to save both worlds from powerful enemies.

The idea of having a Digimon partner fueled children’s imaginations and made the series one of the most memorable anime aired on Philippine television.

9. Akazukin Chacha (ABS-CBN, 1999)

Filled with comedy and magic, Akazukin Chacha centers on the clumsy young magician Chacha, who wears her trademark red hood while discovering the truth about her family and protecting the kingdom from evil.

Its humorous storytelling and colorful characters made it a favorite among younger viewers.

10. Dragon Ball (RPN-9, 1992; GMA, 2000)

Before Dragon Ball Z became a global sensation, Filipino audiences first followed the adventures of young Son Goku as he searched for the seven mystical Dragon Balls capable of granting any wish.

The franchise’s thrilling martial arts battles and unforgettable transformations would later cement Dragon Ball as one of the greatest anime series of all time.

11. Fushigi Yuugi (GMA-7, 2000)

Blending romance, fantasy, and adventure, Fushigi Yuugi tells the story of high school friends Miaka and Yui, who are transported into the mystical world inside an ancient book.

The emotional love story, combined with mythology and action, made it especially popular among Filipino teenage viewers.

12. Voltes V (GMA-7)

Few anime have left a cultural impact in the Philippines quite like Voltes V. Originally airing locally in 1978 before returning to television decades later, the series follows five young pilots who combine their vehicles to form the mighty robot Voltes V in their battle against the Boazanian Empire.

Its themes of family, courage, sacrifice, and unity resonated deeply with Filipino audiences, while its iconic theme song remains instantly recognizable generations later.

For Filipino millennials, these anime series were far more than after-school entertainment. They shaped childhood friendships, introduced timeless lessons about courage and perseverance, and sparked a lifelong appreciation for Japanese animation.

While today’s viewers have access to thousands of titles through streaming services, there’s something uniquely nostalgic about racing home to catch the latest dubbed episode on free television. For many ’90s kids, those afternoons spent with Goku, Naruto, Eugene, Kenshin, Sakura, and the rest remain some of the happiest memories of growing up.
