  • “Gusto Ko Tama: Fighting Disinformation in Social Media.”

From teaching young Filipinos to use their mobile phones to report concerns and wrongdoing in their community, “Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo” (BMPM) is now challenging the future of the country to use their phones to fight disinformation through joining the “BMPM Digitales: A Mobile Documentary Contest.”

Launched this month, “BMPM Digitales” invites college students aged 18 to 22 to produce a 3-5 minute documentary, using only their mobile phone for shooting and editing, about the theme “Gusto Ko Tama: Fighting Disinformation in Social Media.”

BMPM head Rowena Paraan said “Digitales” aims to educate the younger generation on responsible social media use and how to discern fake from real information.

“We have seen the creativity of the youth today in using their mobile phones to express themselves and connect with a wide audience. ‘Digitales’ is another avenue for them to put this creativity to good use and actually help in educating other people about fake news and how to make social media a safe space for everyone,” she said.

An offshoot of BMPM’s 2016 mobile shorts contest “SinePatrol,” the contest is a project of ABS-CBN News in coordination with the UNESCO.

Cash prizes and trophies await the winners, with the 1st placer taking home P50,000, while the 2nd placer gets P20,000, and the third placer receiving P10,000.

For the full mechanics, interested students may visit the contest’s microsite https://bmpmdigitales.abs-cbn.com, where they will also have to register and submit their entries.

Last day of submission is on September 20, 2019.

Among those encouraging students to join the contest is multi-awarded broadcast journalist and documentarist Jeff Canoy, who recently produced his own mobile documentary for the ABS-CBN current affairs program “#NoFilter.”

His piece, which focused on the love between a mother and her child with down syndrome, was shot and edited using only a mobile phone.

Jeff promoted the contest on Twitter saying, “Uy sali na guys! Masarap magmahal at mahalin ang proseso ng pag-dokyu. (Hey guys join this contest! It feels good to love the process of making a documentary).

BMPM is ABS-CBN News’ citizen journalism arm, where people may send their reports, which are then verified and referred to the appropriate agency or office for immediate response and action.

Now on its 12th year, BMPM is also active in educating students and communities about media literacy through workshops and seminars held all over the country.
