When it comes to debt, get it in writing.
This was the main take-away of Senators Alan and Pia Cayetano and Boy Abunda as they reflected on the issue they tackled in the latest episode of their public service program ‘CIA with BA.’
Two debt cases were tackled on Sunday, April 16, including two women complaining about their neighbor who owes them a total of about P45,000 for jueteng bets.
Another woman sought the advice of the sibling senators on what to do regarding a friend to whom she lent money for the rebuilding of the latter’s house. However, her friend regarded the money as “help” and not debt.
“Being a non-lawyer, ang natutunan ko… walang kinalaman sa relasyon — pamilya man, magkapatid, magpinsan — pagdating sa utang, aba’y dapat may kasulatan,” Abunda said.
Senator Pia agreed as she shared reflections on the episode.
“Ang daming mabubuti, mababait na tao na out of the goodness of their heart, mapagbigay, pero protect yourself, because you have to protect yourself, your family and that means nga, either idaan sa kasulatan or pag-isipan ng dalawa o tatlong beses bago maglabas ng hard-earned money,” she said.
“And for those naman na nangangailangan, uutang… panindigan naman natin ang kabaitan ng mga kaibigan o kapitbahay natin na tumulong… kahit paunti-unti, even to our hard work, magpakita tayo ng respeto,” she added.
For his part, Senator Alan said the key word is respect. “Lahat ng problemang legal, nandyan ‘yan, pero, it becomes much clearer,” he said,
“CIA with BA,” which aired its pilot episode on February 5, marks Senator Alan Peter and Senator Pia’s debut outing as on-air legal advisers.
