Juan Karlos Labajo expresses concern over ‘breadwinner kids’ culture in the Philippines

Singer-songwriter Juan Karlos Labajo has expressed dismay over the growing number of Filipino children forced into becoming breadwinners at a young age—a reality he’s witnessed firsthand as one of the judges on ‘Idol Kids Philippines’.

In a recent online post, JK said he finds it heartbreaking whenever young contestants cite helping their families as the reason for joining the competition.

“Sobrang nakakalungkot para sa akin kapag merong isang 8-year-old [na nagsasabing], ‘Bakit ka sumali ng Idol Kids? Para po matulungan ang magulang ko.’ Why?” he said.

“Let the kids be kids. The kids deserve to be children. Huwag kayong mag-anak, mag-ipon muna kayo.”

His remarks resonated with many netizens, sparking a broader conversation about the so-called “toxic breadwinner culture” in Filipino families. Some shared their own sentiments online.

While JK acknowledged that many children willingly try to help their families out of love, he hopes society can eventually break free from the cycle that often places financial pressure on the youngest members of the household. He emphasized the importance of allowing children to enjoy their youth rather than bear the burdens of adult responsibilities.

JK’s candid commentary was praised by fans and followers who believe that the role of providing for the family should lie primarily with the parents—not the children.

‘Idol Kids Philippines’, airing weekends starting June 28, features young talents reaching for their dreams under the guidance of a star-studded panel including Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Angeline Quinto, Gary Valenciano, and Juan Karlos himself. The show airs on Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, and Kapamilya Online Live every Saturday from 7:15 PM to 8:30 PM, and on TV5 every Saturday (8:00 PM–9:15 PM) and Sunday (8:15 PM–9:30 PM).
