Jake Cuenca shared two of his most memorable experiences with former Star Magic Head Mr. M, aka Johnny Manahan.
During Star Magic’s virtual tribute for Mr. M’s 50th anniversary in showbiz, Jake was asked by Sweet Lapus about his most notable experience with Mr. M.
According to Jake, there were two instances that he will not forget about the man behind Star Magic.
One is their first meeting after he transferred from GMA Network to ABS-CBN.
“So going into Mr. M’s office I don’t know what to expect sabi ko lang you know I’ll just keep an open mind whatever they want me to become I’ll agree. Tapos to my surprise, parang nagulat ako, pagkakilala ko kay Mr. M he just told me to be myself for better or for worse.
“Kung papano ka ganyan na yun, that’s how you’re gonna be whether ano, kontrabida ka or bida ka dapat yung essence mo na may konting mischievous or pagiging bad boy he told me to own it, so dun ako nagulat, its first time,” said Jake.
The second and the most memorable according to Jake was the time when first saw Mr. M mad and scolded him after he figured in an altercation with Baron Geisler.
“Second time, yung first time ako pinagalitan ni Mr. M, yun ang di ko makakalimutan,” Jake recalled.
“Andun kame sa ASAP, promo ng Tayong Dalawa yun eh…parang nagkaron kame ng konting altercation ni Baron that time.
“Nasa labas kame ng studio ng ASAP, nagsisigawan kame ni Baron nagaaway, eto na si Mr. M ngayon paparating. So, sinigawan nya kaming dalawa. So eto na ngayon parang lahat ng angas, lahat ng ganito bigla na lang kame ni Baron naging, naging 6 years old kame ulit pinagalitan kame ni Mr. M,” Jake continued.
“Dun ko nasabi na, okay grabe talaga tong ginawa ko kasi first time ko nakita magalit si Mr. M talaga. So for me pag nagsalita na si Mr. M, lahat talaga kame nakikinig kasi parang ama sya sa aming lahat. So for me the best thing I ever learned from Mr. M is just to be myself, just to own it,” he added.

Known as the father of Star Magic, Mr. M started his career in the industry in 1971. He was responsible for discovering and building the careers of many artists who became big names in the showbiz industry. But aside from taking care of the ABS-CBN talent artists, he is also known for directing some of the most famous Kapamilya programs then and now like ASAP, Palibhasa Lalake, Abangan Ang Susunod Na Kabanata, Ang TV, Home Along Da Riles, Oki Doki Doc, and The Voice of the Philippines.
