Why You Should See It
Beautifully shot and compellingly-written, ‘Loving Emily’ does not just underscore Calzado’s and Blake’s incredible restraints, but also a moving story about a woman’s struggle to free herself from mid-life crisis chains, her long-awaited emancipation immaculately rendered in a forbidden romance.
Flesh abounds in ‘Loving Emily’, a story of May-December love affair featuring the characters played by the very beautiful Iza Calzado and cute, confidently smart, Jameson Blake. The plot operates in the Glorious (Angel Aquino, Tony Labrusca) fashion, but some emotional layers push the narrative to some beautiful places, enough to turn this familiar tale of forbidden romance, poignant and hopeful at the same time.
In the story, Emily (Calzado) is a married woman who no longer finds the happiness she once found within the four corners of her home. Her husband (Epy Quizon) has been engaging in an illicit affair, and she’s been unhappy with how her career is going. When her father dies, she takes a long ride back to her country home, driving her father’s favorite car, which now belongs to her. It is during that ride when what feels a wasted life hits her, with all those glaring flashbacks of how her bad and wrong decisions led her to that gloomy part of her existence. She meets Vince (Blake), a local club singer, in his 20s, whose meaningful stares quickly catch her attention. A few drinks and they are already inside a private room, sharing what could be the most intimate moment one career woman in her 40s can have with a beautiful young man.
Emily’s intimate sexcapades with Vince are an entire character that drives the story to intimate places, but the crisp cinematography rendered in the show’s both somber and vibrant palettes is an equally outstanding element that gives this bittersweet anecdote an extra flair. Calzado’s moments of restraint are screaming testaments to the actress’s unquestionable versatility. Blake navigates Vince’s innocence and wild vulnerability through believably-conveyed small but precisely-acted nuances, proving his tested caliber as a truly fine actor.
