Known for fusing operatic vocals with a contemporary flair, emerging artist Claudillea creates boundary breaking music. Laying the year to rest, her latest release “Requiem” is a final farewell to 2020 – looking expectedly to the future.
“Requiem” showcases Claudillea’s ability to fuse disparate genres seamlessly together – bringing a refreshing flair to opera’s archaic traditions. Filled with shimmering synths and pounding pop melodies, Claudillea’s vocals are poignant and powerful – carving out her own musical lane.
“‘Requiem’ features excerpts from ‘Pie Jesu’ from Faurè’s ‘Requiem’. A requiem is a funeral mass and the Latin text asks for Jesus to ‘grant them rest’. I don’t think of this as a religious song, it’s more that I wanted to make a funeral for 2020”, Claudillea explains. “For most people across the world it was a very difficult year, but I wanted to highlight that we made it through – so let’s put 2020 to rest. It is my first step towards my vision of breaking down music boundaries by bringing standard operatic vocal music into the world of contemporary music.”
Claudillea rose to fame in 2020 after earning a place on The Voice UK. During her blind audition, Claudillea performed an original remixed version of the “Queen of The Night Aria”, leading to an explosive reaction from the judges. Originally from Cambridgeshire but raised in Borneo, Malaysia, Claudillea’s multicultural upbringing gave her a global perspective and a sense of limitlessness. Keen to be different to her peers, Claudillea began to focus on classical vocal techniques and truly sculpted her sound.
Now based in London, Claudillea’s boundary pushing releases combine her love for opera with irresistible pop rhythms. It’s a fascinating hybrid, and she is focussed on making the artform more accessible for a global audience. “For me, the opera world actively excludes certain demographics, and I want the new generation to not squirm when they hear it”.
“Requiem” is set for release 18th December.
