The rebranding of GMA Network’s second free-to-air channel, GTV, formerly known as GMA News TV, caused the channel to be the current second most-watched channel nationwide.
In February 2021, GMA Network officially unveiled the fresh GTV.
According to GMA Network Executive Atty. Annette Gozon-Valdez, GTV was formulated to cater to the needs of viewers and to provide a variety of programs—not merely focusing on news.
Gozon said: “While we are retaining the loved and trusted news programs of GMA News TV, we started adding a lot of shows—entertainment shows, we are going to add NCAA soon. So, the name GMA News TV wouldn’t really be apt anymore.”
GMA Network decided to rebrand GMA News TV instead of creating another channel named GTV because they wanted to improve the former channel.
Gozon also said that she wants GTV to be known as a channel that gives what the young and the young-at-heart want to watch. Gozon also said that she wants GTV to be a channel that gives what the young and the young-at-heart wish to watch.
Almost a year after its launching, GTV is competing well in TV ratings.
Some of its notable programs are ‘Heartful Cafe’, ‘The Lost Recipe‘, and ‘My Fantastic Pag-ibig‘. Currently, its programs ‘Dapat Alam Mo’ and ‘G! Flicks’ are included in AGB Nielsen’s Top 20 Most-Watched shows nationwide.
And now, based on the AGB Nielsen data for November to December 11, 2021, GTV is the second Most-Watched channel nationwide with an 11.3% audience share.
GMA Network remains number 1 with 41.5%, while TV5 and A2Z earned 10.5% and 4.1%, respectively.
This audience share of GTV is expected to increase soon as it continues to expand its reach as it promotes its digital terrestrial television (DTT) distribution via upgrades of transmitters.
