Chai Fonacier discusses how her character in ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’ reflects people who call out social injustices

On January 16, actress Chai Fonacier discussed how her character in Maria Clara at Ibarra reflected the people who call out social injustices.

At the media conference for the Season 2 of Maria Clara at Ibarra, Fonacier highlighted her character’s motivation and how it translated to socially aware people.

“Si Lucia hindi masyadong nakikita sa series so far pero, mahal ko ‘yung character because she along with ‘yung character ni Kirst, and ‘yung kuya ni Lucia at lahat ng mga tulisan, sila ‘yung mga nag-embody ng mga tao na nagre-reklamo.

“Malaking ang papel–lately in the last several years about ‘yung mga aktibista na nag-rereklamo, pero in history naman, kung walang nag-rereklamo hindi mag-iimprove ‘yung sitwasyon natin bilang tao.”

She then cited how the Philippines’ National Hero, Jose Rizal, used his novels to call out injustices during the Spanish era.

“Kahit ‘yung in current terms, kung nabuhay si Rizal ngayon, mata-tag din siya as reklamador. Pero noon, kung hindi siya nag-reklamo, kung–ang pagsulat niya ng Noli at El Fili ay paraan niya ng pagre-reklamo. Nag-reklamo siya kasi may mali.

“Nakarelate ako sa character ko kasi ako bilang also reklamador but in a sense na kapag may nakita tayong mali, magre-reklamo tayo. Nag-rereklamo tayo dahil may gusto tayong baguhin for the better.”

She also noted how people like her character made changes and improvements in society by calling out injustices.

“What I relate to with my character is kung ano ‘yung nangyayari before, ay nangyayari pa rin ngayon at importante pa rin ang mga reklamador kasi sila din ‘yung nakakatulong to help affect change. Kahit naman before, tignan natin ‘yung history ng kababaihan.

“Noon before, hindi pa–pinagbabawalang bumoto ang mga babae, pero may nag-reklamo, kaya ngayon tayong mga babae nakakaboto na ngayon. Mayroon tayong mga freedoms ngayon na tinatamasa natin kasi may nag-reklamo noon.”

She then asserted how her character allows her to push discussions that fight for causes and social injustices.

“‘Yun ang pinaka-importante sa akin sa role na ito, na nabibigyan ng nuance ‘yung discussion about uprisings, or about fighting for causes na hindi lang siya pagre-reklamo for the sake of pagre-reklamo, nagre-reklamo tayo kasi may mali. Kasi wala namang mag-rereklamo kung walang mali, di ba?

“Kung walang mali, walang magre-reklamo. At hindi pinipili ng tao na magalit, I mean on a good day pipiliin ba nating magalit, di ba hindi? Mas pipiliin natin maging masaya di ba? Pero may mga nakakagalit na bagay sa lipunan ngayon na karekla-reklamo talaga at kailangan siyang patuloy na pag-usapan.”

The Kapuso primetime teleserye Maria Clara at Ibarra stars Julie Anne San Jose, Dennis Trillo, Barbie Forteza and David Licauco.

The period-fantasy series also introduced new cast members for the El Filibusterismo Saga with Khalil Ramos, Kim De Leon, Julia Pascual, Arnold Reyes, and Pauline Mendoza.

The series also features Andrea Torres, Juancho Trivino, Tirso Cruz III, Rocco Nacino, Dennis Padilla, Fonacier, Gilleth Sandico, Juan Rodrigo, Ces Quesada, Lou Veloso, and Kirst Viray.

Under the direction of Zig Dulay, the continuation of Maria Clara at Ibarra airs weeknights on GMA Telebabad after 24 Oras.
