On February 28, Doctor Lizette Kristine Lopez emphasized how the facilities in The Medical City provide a safe space for LGBTQIA+ patients.
At the launch of The Medical City’s Wellness & Aesthetics Institute, Lopez cited the services they offer LGBTQIA+ patients, especially trans people.
“So, for transgender and non-binary persons, services for gender-affirming hormone therapy. And we [are] also connecting people for gender-affirming surgery for those who want to avail of that. Also, of course, a part of our team is psychiatry for mental health services for LGBTQIA+ persons, whether it’s related to gender dysphoria or anything else, basically.
“Any other services– because I know that even– for persons who are not transgender or [even] not non-binary and [they]– decide that they don’t want treatment for gender dysphoria.”
She also pointed out how their new facility addresses the stigma and discrimination felt by trans men and women when availing of medical services.
“One problem, for example– actually for transmen, for [example]– they need [also] the gender services for female– they also need preventive services for female and unfortunately for transmen [for example] to go to the OB-GYN offices and be with cis-gender women and look at them with some stigma and discrimination.
“As for transgender women, they would also need some services–for preventive services as well, and that’s where we loop in wellness and screening for those kinds of patients as well, and also for other services they require.”

She then highlighted how The Medical City’s Wellness & Aesthetics Institute provides a holistic approach to medical care for LGBTQIA+ patients.
“Because remember, in the LGBTQ, there are specific health needs that they need that would need to be seen holistically– as the gender-affirming services. However, they also have health needs that they may not need to be aware of in terms of screening that would be good for their wellness, also. So, that’s why we loop them in.
“In fact, we are not just looking at them in terms of hormones. Even if I’m an endocronoligst, we are also screening for diabetes, cholesterol, and all of these common problems, which may not be [normally] seen. And we are also providing the safe space they need for them to be able to be seen and to be comfortable and get the services they need.”
