Famous Filipino rapper Bassilyo, also a member of the popular 90s hip-hop group ‘Crazy as Pinoy’ believes that there are many talented yet underrated artists in the underground hip-hop scene.
During the press conference for their new music release under the label Blvck Music on May 16, Bassilyo addressed the question about the existing competition in the hip-hop scene, stating, “Marami lalo na ngayon sobrang dami ng artists” (referring to the competition in the hip-hop industry). Unlike before, so yung mga may pure talents lang talaga yung nakikita sa mainstream pero marami pa rin namang underground na magagaling, pero nasa audience pa rin kung sino gusto nilang pakinggan.”
Bassilyo, also known as Lordivino Ignacio, along with Sisa (Muriel Jamito) and Crispin (Jeffrey Pilien), formed the group ‘Crazy as Pinoy’ and is considered one of the pioneers of the Filipino hip-hop scene.
These three artists, mentored by the late Master Rapper Francis Magalona, have made significant contributions to the rap community. This is done through their hit songs ‘Panaginip’, ‘Huwad’, and ‘Crazy Dance’.
During the mid-2000s, the group continued creating music while also allowing each member to pursue solo careers in the music industry. Bassilyo achieved significant success with his popular song ‘Lord Patawad’ and has since transitioned into a full-fledged actor, starring alongside Coco Martin in the TV series ‘Batang Quiapo’.
In an effort to bring a fresh perspective to their music for the Gen Z audience, Bassilyo also acknowledged the intense competition within the rap industry. He stated that the bar is set “too high” for them.
“Napakalaki ng kompetisyon ngayon, lalo na sobrang dami na ng artist, unlike before na konti lang kami, pero sobrang taas ng kompetisyon ngayon kasi may Internet na, kaya kahit sino pwede nang gumawa at maglabas ng sarili nilang musika,” he said.
In addition to their comeback this year, the trio finally unveiled the highly anticipated music video for their beloved song ‘Panaginip’, originally released in 2003.
