‘Flower Girl’ starring Sue Ramirez selected as Closing Film of the 24th New York Asian Film Festival

Following a string of buzzworthy screenings in the Philippines where it just opened in cinemas, the New York Asian Film Festival announced Flower Girl, written and directed by Fatrick Tabada, as the Closing Film of its 2025 edition.

Flower Girl will have its international premiere on July 27 with both Tabada and lead actress Sue Ramirez scheduled to attend.

A wickedly fun tale of a woman who offends a trans-fairy and is cursed to lose her vagina, Flower Girl is already being hailed as a bold new voice in Philippine cinema. One reviewer describes it as a “fearless Filipino comedy … redefining gender and identity,” while Tabada himself notes the film was “inspired by the discrimination that transwomen often face,” giving the story both urgency and heart.

With a breakout performance from its lead actress and a script that refuses easy sentimentality, Flower Girl is a fitting finale of a festival known for spotlighting bold new Asian auteurs.

The closing night screening of Flower Girl will be on Sunday, July 27th at 8:30 PM EDT at the SVA Theater in West 23rd, with a Q&A session with Fatrick Tabada.
