Every year, celebrity dentist Dr. Samantha Bernardo steps away from her clinic and into communities that need her most.
Her annual dental mission—an outreach she has been spearheading since 2017—has grown from modest feeding programs and small donations into large-scale initiatives offering comprehensive dental care. For Dr. Sam, it’s more than charity; it’s a personal crusade rooted in humble beginnings and her deep commitment to oral health education.
“Lagi kong sinasabi na since 2017, talagang gusto ko nang tumulong,” she shares. “Ako kasi ang first dentist sa family, galing din kasi ako sa hirap…first training ko nga sa baba ng bahay.”
From those early days, her advocacy has only expanded. Last year, she launched missions that provided not only free consultations but full dental services for children in need. This year, her goal is even bigger: to serve more than 3,000 kids.
“Kanina talaga, andami na rin naming na-cater—nasa thousands na rin kami!” she beams, crediting the growing pool of volunteers who help power her mission.
But Dr. Sam’s advocacy isn’t just about treating teeth—it’s about changing perceptions of dental care in the Philippines.
“Akala nila pagpunta nila sa clinic, matic, kapag nakakita ng dentista, masakit?” she says. “Hindi priority ang oral health, sadly talaga, dito sa Pilipinas.”
Through her clinic, AWESAM Dental Smile Clinic, she aims to flip that narrative. “We want them to feel na friendly, comfortable… talagang thorough check-up kami. Ini-educate namin. Sinasabi namin kung ano ang kinakailangan.”
Among her ambassadors is actress Kim Rodriguez, whose radiant smile reflects the clinic’s ethos of building confidence through care. But Dr. Sam is quick to warn against blindly following dental trends.
“Marami kasing cases…na nag-visit sa clinic na naka-veneers, pero may gingivitis pala, paga ‘yung gums, o sira na ‘yung loob,” she cautions. Her campaign this year? “Beauty inside and out.” For her, veneers are purely aesthetic and should never hide untreated dental issues.
“Kung saan masaya ang pasyente, kung doon sila makakapag-build ng confidence, di ba? Kasi ang ngipin, nakakaapekto sa overall wellbeing natin.”
She is also outspoken against viral DIY dental hacks that put patients at risk. “Akala mo candy, menthos, itatapal…maraming cases ngayon na lalong namamaga. Very against ako dyan…misleading din sa mga pasyente,” she says firmly. Her message is clear: nothing replaces professional care.
Behind each outreach is at least a month of preparation, from locking in schedules to rallying support. For Dr. Sam, the real goal goes beyond the thousands of patients she treats.
“Gusto ko talaga ‘yung reach, na malaman nila ‘yung importance,” she says. And with every mission, she restores not just smiles, but dignity, confidence, and hope.
