Epson Southeast Asia Expands Circular Economy Initiatives and Strengthens Emissions Transparency in FY24 Sustainability Report

Epson, a global technology leader, released its FY2024 Southeast Asia (SEA) Sustainability Report, highlighting progress in advancing regional circular economy initiatives, strengthening emissions transparency and scaling community impact programs across the region. Aligned with Epson’s global Environmental Vision 2050, the report underscores Epson SEA’s commitment to achieving carbon negativity and eliminating reliance on underground resources.

Epson began collecting regional emissions data in FY23, and has already made measurable strides in its sustainability journey. The FY24 report spotlights progress across four materialities – Achieve Sustainability in a Circular Economy, Advance the Frontiers of Industry, Improve Quality of Life and Fulfil Social Responsibility – which reflect Epson’s comprehensive approach to driving impact. Within this framework, Epson reduced electricity usage by about 11% in FY24, cutting Scope 2 emissions to 814 tons CO₂e, roughly the equivalent of the annual energy use of around 4,500 refrigerators.

Achieving Sustainability in a More Circular Economy

In FY24, Epson SEA advanced its circular economy agenda by reducing waste and cutting logistics emissions. The expansion of drop-shipping operations alone avoided 113 tons of CO₂e, a potential 21% increase over FY23.

To strengthen transparency and enable more informed sustainability decisions, Epson has also expanded its Scope 3 emissions tracking in FY24. This broadened visibility goes hand in hand with Epson’s place-based approach, where individual markets are driving targeted initiatives to reduce waste, conserve resources and improve sustainability performance. These efforts culminated into notable sustainability progress at the regional level, where Epson’s Southeast Asian markets recycled over 1,600kg of ink consumables and converted more than 500kg of food waste into fertilizer – equivalent to around 1,700 meals.

Epson’s efforts to strengthen in-office circularity resulted in one SEA office achieving BCA Green Mark Gold certification during the reporting period, with five more offices receiving certifications since. The recognition across the region emphasizes Epson’s commitment to sustainable building practices that improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprints.

Strengthening Governance and Efficiency to Advance Industry Frontiers

In FY24, Epson SEA continued to embed sustainability into its operations through digitalization, governance and employee well-being.

Governance was reinforced with 100% employee participation in compliance training, alongside robust anti-corruption, health and safety measures. Notably, Epson SEA recorded zero workplace-related incidents in FY24. Alongside continued investments in its people through targeted training and well-being initiatives, these achievements reflect Epson’s strong commitment to operational excellence and employee safety.

Enhancing Community Quality of Life in Epson’s Operational Regions

Epson SEA remains committed to improving the quality of life by supporting education and access to learning.

In FY24, Epson expanded its support for education through its “Epson Goes to School” program and donations of printers, helping teachers and students access learning materials more effectively. Epson also supported robotics programs across the region, inspiring the next generation of innovators and equipping them with the tools to thrive in a digital future.

Upholding Social Responsibility

In FY24, Epson’s commitment to social responsibility was reflected in partnerships that restore ecosystems and reduce waste.

Epson SEA collaborated with NGOs and local stakeholders to recover over 1,400 kg of waste, including plastics and foam, through clean-up efforts across six SEA markets. Epson Indonesia partnered with WWF’s Trees for Life project to plant 200,000 trees across 300 hectares, directly benefiting 300 families and contributing to long-term ecosystem restoration.

“At Epson, sustainability is about empowering our employees and communities to drive positive change and create a better future,” said Tan May Lin, Sustainability Task Force Leader, Epson Southeast Asia. “Alongside strong collaboration with partners and the community, our task force has strengthened data transparency and accountability across SEA. Aligning Epson’s global sustainability goals with regional priorities ensures we track progress and scale initiatives that make a meaningful impact.”

Alvin Tan, Lead for Country Initiatives, Epson Southeast Asia, said, “Sustainability progress must be lived out across Epson’s markets in SEA. From reducing emissions and plastic waste to expanding education access through our solutions, this hands-on approach empowers both employees and communities, ensuring our commitments translate into real benefits for people and the environment.”
