The moment guests stepped inside Skydome at SM North EDSA last May 27, it was immediately obvious that MEI MEI was not aiming for an ordinary girl group launch.

Instead of walking into a cold, heavily corporate media event, attendees were welcomed into something that felt warm, chaotic, nostalgic, and unmistakably Filipino—like entering a modern barrio fiesta reimagined through the lens of today’s rising P-pop generation.
Bright banderitas filled the venue ceiling. Loud chatter from excited fans echoed across the arena. The smell of familiar Filipino snacks lingered in the air while cameras flashed nonstop as media personalities, content creators, and supporters explored the colorful installations surrounding the venue.

Even before the members officially appeared onstage, MEI MEI had already successfully introduced the kind of identity they wanted audiences to remember them for: youthful, proudly local, energetic, and deeply connected to Filipino culture.
The eight-member group, composed of Alexa, Jhamayka, Ada, Aerise, Althea, Jessie, Yuni, and Dina, officially unveiled themselves to the public through a launch event that felt less like a formal debut and more like an immersive celebration of Filipino community spirit.
One of the most charming parts of the evening was how interactive the entire experience felt from start to finish.
Guests were not simply asked to sit down and wait for performances to begin. Instead, the venue itself became part of the storytelling. Fans excitedly lined up at activity booths inspired by familiar Filipino childhood experiences, including the MEI MEI Color Game, the playful Sari-Sari Store installation, Gulayan at Prutasan displays, Iskramble stations, and the crowd-favorite Mang Alex Tusok-Tusok booth.

The setup instantly triggered nostalgia among attendees, especially those who grew up around local fiestas, school fairs, and neighborhood celebrations. Everywhere you looked, people were laughing, taking photos, playing games, and sharing snacks while upbeat music blasted through the speakers.
It created an atmosphere that felt approachable and refreshingly grounded—something increasingly rare in today’s highly polished entertainment launches.

As more guests filled the Skydome, the anticipation steadily intensified.
Fans proudly waved banners and phones while cheering every time teaser visuals of the group flashed on the massive LED screens. By the time the official program began at around 6 PM, the entire venue was already bursting with energy.
The event opened with a crowd interaction segment through the “MEI Bingo Game,” immediately establishing a fun and relaxed connection between the audience and the show itself. Instead of creating distance between performers and fans, the launch continuously encouraged participation and shared excitement.

Soon after, Groovy Garden Records director Vernon Go addressed attendees and formally introduced MEI MEI as the label’s newest rising act in the OPM and P-pop scene. His message reflected confidence in the group’s potential, emphasizing both their hard work and their unique direction as performers.
Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.
As the lights dimmed and screams erupted throughout the venue, MEI MEI finally stepped onto the stage for their opening performance—and within seconds, the rookie group immediately proved why they had already started attracting attention online.

Despite being newcomers, the members performed with surprising confidence and chemistry. Their synchronized choreography, stable vocals, and energetic stage presence instantly transformed the venue into a full concert-like atmosphere.
What stood out most throughout the night was how each member managed to showcase distinct personalities while still functioning cohesively as a team.
Some delivered fierce performance energy during dance-heavy segments, while others naturally connected with the audience through playful facial expressions and crowd interactions. Even in quieter moments between performances, their group dynamic felt authentic rather than overly rehearsed.

During a candid interview segment, the members opened up about the intense preparation they underwent before officially debuting.
According to the group, training days often stretched until late evenings, with nonstop rehearsals focused on both singing and dancing. They also admitted that mental preparation became equally important as they adjusted to the pressures and expectations that come with entering the entertainment industry.
That honesty made the group feel even more relatable to attendees.

Instead of presenting themselves as already-perfect idols, the members openly acknowledged the hard work, exhaustion, and emotional challenges they experienced together while preparing for this major milestone.
The strongest emotional connection of the evening arrived during the live performance of their newest song, “Telebong.”
Before taking the stage, the hosts explained that the track was created as a celebration of Filipino upbringing, family traditions, shared memories, and everyday experiences that connect generations.

As soon as the music started, the entire venue transformed into a vibrant cultural celebration.
The performance blended catchy melodies, colorful visuals, nostalgic references, and playful choreography inspired by Filipino humor and traditions. Audience members immediately responded with loud cheers and sing-along reactions even during the song’s first public showcase.
Rather than chasing international trends too aggressively, “Telebong” embraced local identity unapologetically, and that authenticity became one of its strongest assets.

The excitement inside the venue reached another level when attendees were treated to an exclusive first look at the official music video immediately after the performance. Phones quickly filled the air as fans reacted enthusiastically to the vibrant visuals and playful storytelling featured in the MV preview.
Even before its official release on streaming platforms, the song already generated strong buzz among attendees and online fan communities.
Beyond the performances, one thing became increasingly clear throughout the evening: MEI MEI wants to create more than just catchy pop songs.
The group repeatedly emphasized their desire to spread happiness and positive energy through their music and journey together. During the media conference and closing messages, the members sincerely expressed gratitude toward supporters while sharing their hope of becoming artists people can emotionally connect with.

That sincerity resonated strongly inside the venue.
By the end of the night, fans were no longer simply reacting to visuals or choreography. They were reacting to personality, warmth, and the genuine excitement radiating from a group clearly passionate about finally sharing their dreams with the public.

As attendees slowly exited the Skydome after the event, the atmosphere still felt unusually lively. Fans continued discussing their favorite members, replaying performance clips on their phones, and talking excitedly about the upcoming release of “Telebong.”
For a rookie group making its official introduction, MEI MEI managed to accomplish something difficult: they made people remember not just their performances, but the feeling of the entire experience.
And in today’s fast-moving P-pop landscape, that emotional connection may ultimately become their biggest strength. (with reports from Kirby Morante)
