June 2021 — Brisbane-born R&B singer-songwriter Shin Yen has released his latest single ‘Off’ today, his fourth single in two years.
‘Off’ is a metaphor for a toxic romance, written in the form of a character suffering from phone addiction, struggling to “shut it off”. Sonically inspired by American record producer J Dilla and rapper Anderson .Paak, the single is inspired by the increased use in technology for communications during the Covid-19 pandemic, Shin Yen’s own relationship with technology and his own feelings of how mobile devices have become dominant and irreplaceable in his life.
Born in Brisbane, Shin Yen is now based in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, who specialises in a unique blend of R&B and hip hop. Shin Yen made his debut in 2020 with the release of his first single ‘Fully Mine’. The success of his debut single was quickly followed by his subsequent tracks ‘Boy’s Don’t Cry’ and ‘Tempo’ in 2021. As of June 2021, Shin Yen has almost 13,000 streams across platforms, and 4,600 listeners on Spotify.
Beginning with the flute and saxophone, Shin Yen traces his musical roots to his early days in jazz, before picking up the guitar and moving into the R&B and hip hop genres in recent years. He is influenced by many of the greats that came before him, including the likes of Frank Ocean, Stevie Wonder, Kendrick Lamar and Anderson .Paak.
