Because he obviously has a love and respect for insects, as well as other living things and feels guilty for subjecting the cockroaches to that kind of torture. It’d be like you taking a tiny mother and throwing her in a tiny village full of cannibals then watching them eat her and her unborn child alive. That’s pretty brutal when you think about it deeply.
