  • Lea Salonga won’t be able to attend the SEA Games opening ceremony.
  • Lea will be in Singapore for the opening of Sweeney Todd.

Kapamilya and Broadway star Lea Salonga confirmed that she will not be able to grace the opening of the 2019 South East Asian Games.

In a tweet Monday, November 25, the singer-actress said that she will be flying to Singapore for her Sweeney Todd show thus she won’t be able to perform at the opening ceremony slated this Saturday, November 30, at the Philippine Arena.

“Leaving on a jet plane for Singapore tomorrow and will begin our 14-show Sweeney run on Thursday night. This means I will not be performing at the SEA Games opening ceremonies on Saturday. I won’t be back home til after Sweeney is done.” she tweeted.

Salonga sang the official theme song of the 30th SEA Games title ‘We Win As One’ composed by Maestro Ryan Cayabyab.

But the news is no longer new as the singer already said last September that she won’t be performing the song at the opening ceremony of the SEA Games.

During the press con for the launch of the official theme song, Lea said that because of her prior commitments for the play Sweeney Todd she won’t be able to join the opening at the Philippine Arena.

“As for the Philippine arena, I won’t be able to sing it in the opening which is where the SEA Games is opening, I think it’s the Philippine Arena, I will not be able to sing it there because I will be in Singapore doing Sweeney Todd. Ahmm it’s unfortunate nga that I won’t be able to perform it when the ceremonies open because I had obviously other engagements and commitments prior to being asked to sing this,” Lea said.

Netizens React

Meanwhile, netizens shared different reactions to Lea’s non-attendance of the SEA Games opening ceremony.

Some shared their disappointment that they won’t be seeing and hearing Lea sing the official theme song live, but many others also shared a sigh of relief because she will be spared the controversies and blunders that have been marring the event.

Sorry to hear that. You could be the fire that will light the looming controversies in the #SeaGame2019. Anyway, good luck!
