Proposed privatization of the Philippine National Railway (PNR) before the launch of its Manila to La Union and Manila to Bicol routes

Broadcast journalist Ted Failon examines the proposed privatization of the Philippine National Railway (PNR) before the launch of its Manila to La Union and Manila to Bicol routes in “Failon Ngayon” this Saturday (July 20).

Critics stress that while the PNR still has a debt worth approximately P70 billion, the new project might just end up unfinished, like the Northrail Project or High Speed Railway in 2006, which the government spent millions of dollars on but only had 20% of its construction done.

Would the privatization of PNR provide better transportation service to Filipinos? Or would it shift the burden of the PNR’s debt and operational expenses to the commuters?

Meanwhile, Ted also looks into the proposal of some lawmakers to abolish the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) or youth council starting this year’s barangay elections.

According to Commision on Elections Commissioner Lucenito Tagle, the SK is a waste of taxpayers’ money because it has become a training ground for corrupt politicians. Kabataan Partylist Rep. Terry Ridon, on the other hand, insisted that the government should focus more on improving the entire barangay political system instead of abolishing SK. Should the SK be abolished or should it be reformed?

Don’t miss the full report in “Failon Ngayon” this Saturday (July 20), 4:45 PM, after SOCO on ABS-CBN with a replay on ANC every Sunday, 2PM.
